September 2018 Chapter Meeting

From Warehouse to Platform - Building Modern Data Applications

Tuesday, September 11th

Speaker Sean Bethune

ABSTRACT: From Warehouse to Platform – Building Modern Data Application

The pace of innovation in data systems, virtual infrastructure, and cloud services continues to be relentless and the many options available to support business data demands are driving data organizations to adopt polyglot multi-solution platforms composed of focused data applications and away from the “one database for everything” approach. This presentation is intended for data professionals involved in architecting, modeling, and developing modern data applications that are looking to build their own data platform. In addition to common platform Big Data architectures such as the Lambda and Kappa integration models, this presentation will also cover the architecture and components of the SMACK stack as well as the latest generation of Cloud native databases and Serverless data services.

In addition to his work experience, Sean has taught in the Data Science, and Healthcare Analytics certificate programs at UW PCE. Sean describes himself as ‘mostly harmless’ and is considered an ‘expert’ in data management only by making many more mistakes than his students.
